One
of several events dating back to the original Potato Days Festival
is the Potato Peeling Contest. Although lots of things have changed
over the decades and just about everything has become mechanized,
the best way to peel a potato is still lots of elbow grease, a
sharp knife or a good old fashioned potato peeler.
This year's competition will be held Saturday
beginning at 1:00 PM on the main entertainment stage. The peeled
potatoes are cooked and mashed for the Mashed
Potato Eating Contest. Therefore, nothing goes
to waste at the festival!
CONTEST RULES
Each contestant is given three minutes to peel as many potatoes
as possible. Potatoes must be peeled clean, however eyes need
not be removed. The winner will be determined by the total net
weight (pounds of potatoes less pounds of peel).
PRIZES
Cash prizes of $75, $50 and $25 will be awarded to the top three
finishers as determined by the official rules and weighing.
HOW TO ENTER
Men and women are encouraged to enter. Entries will close on August
25th, or when 12 entries are received. A $5.00 entry fee is required
and contestants must bring their own peeling instrument. Interested
individuals should request an official entry form.
